Who: All levels. Pace groups and multi-level workouts. Group cap is 30 people. 12 signed up already!

What: Race-prep workouts, group track run, epic bike ride with time trial, master swim session, and lots of learning breaks. Workshops include: functional strength, open-water sports psychology, TRX, yoga, biomechanics, bike fitting, and training principles. Open Eye coffee bar and classroom space will be our chosen hang out. See agenda sheet for specifics.

Where: Chapel Hill, NC! Venues include Homestead Aquatic Center, Bolin Creek paved trail, Fleet Feet Sports, UNC track, and country bike rides to Dairyland road and beyond. Public parking and dining is easy in downtown Carrboro. Nearby hotels include the Franklin, Carolina Inn, or the A Loft hotel.

The silent auction of the student artwork will take place on Saturday, January 28^th from 1-7 pm. We are inviting all members of the surrounding community to come check out the artwork and help out this great cause. Throughout the two-week exhibit, the Mixed Concrete exhibit will showcase the talent of over fifteen UNC students with artwork bridging various mediums, sizes, and themes.  The show will provide a wonderful opportunity for students, faculty, friends, and members of the entire Chapel Hill and Carrboro community to come together in support of a great cause.

WHAT: Mixed Concrete is a two-week long, student artwork-based, fundraising art show benefiting the spring break service trip to Honduras. The show is organized and run by students from the HFH Honduras Global Village Team and features only student work.

WHO: More than 15 students and their artwork will come together to raise money in support of HFH Honduras.

WHEN: The silent auction is on Saturday, Jan. 28^th from 1-7pm.  The artwork is on display from Saturday, Jan. 21 through Saturday, Feb. 4.

DETAILS: Media should check in with Habitat staff upon arrival at the Open Eye Cafe and are permitted to come and go between 1pm and 7pm on Saturday, Jan. 28th. Video recording and photography are permitted throughout the silent auction event. UNC Habitat for Humanity representatives, students and volunteers are available for interviews throughout the exhibition period on the 28th.

VISUALS: We encourage the media to send a photographer/film crew to the cafe as there will be students, family, friends, and members of the community coming together and a lot of amazing student artwork throughout the exhibition and, especially, during the event on January 28th.

Hundreds of residents recently turned out to hold events to convince the producers to pick Carrboro. Well, Carrboro has made the cut!!!  Now the producers are coming back for a Town Hall Meeting from 6 – 8 pm on Tuesday, December 13 at 301 W. Main Street in Carrboro.

So if you love Carrboro and you want Oprah to do Lovetown here, tell your Carrboro single friends to apply to be on the show and come and meet the producers on December 13.  The application is on the Carrboro Town’s website.  

The winning town must show those producers that it has the small-town feel and enthusiasm they want.  The original, unscripted TV project is about mass matchmaking in an American town of roughly 15,000 residents with a good sense of community spirit and a picturesque location.

The show, expected to begin taping early next year, will bring professional matchmakers to town for 30 days to pair up singles and see how their developing relationships affect the town.  The top 20 towns, which also include N.C. towns Newton and Reidsville, will learn the final decision in January and begin taping shortly after. The series is set to air in 2012. Annette Stone, the town’s economic development director, has been working with producers and local businesses, such as Open Eye Cafe, to promote the town’s participation.

This is the third year Scott has judged in Guatemala, and he has seen the ability of its baristas continue to improve year after  year – resulting in higher and higher placement in the World Barista Championships (WBC), as evidenced by 2010 Guatemala Champion Raul Rodas, who finished 2nd place overall in the London WBC.

This years Champion was again Raul Rodas from the Acatenango area, and he will go on to compete at the 2012 WBC in Vienna in June.

62 and 25 mile route options are available through the Orange County countryside.

The ride starts 10AM on Saturday Jan 7th!

$10 minimum contribution goes to the Eastern NC Multiple Sclerosis Society, and gets you a spot in the flaming hot chili peloton that will be cruising through rural Orange County, as well as some hot and tasty homemade vittles when you get back!!

Vittles include the best tasting Chili, Cornbread, and Coffee you’ll ever have!! Food and drinks are provided by The Open Eye Cafe, the TriCyclists Bicycle Racing Club, and the Team Open Eye BikeMS Cycling Club

What Carrboro needs now is Love, Sweet, Love! Attention all Carrboro Citizens, do you, or someone you know, who is single, want to find love? This could be your chance. The BBC World Wide Productions and Oprah Winfrey Network are in search of the town with the biggest heart and the most love to give.

Love experts from the BBC and OWN will be taking over one whole town for the biggest dating challenge in TV history. For 30 days, an expert team of matchmakers will guide the quest for love, examining the effects it can have on the DNA of one American community.

Show the love Carrboro and come together to help match singles and bring a new found mutual love to your entire community. Singles will need to fill out an application that can be found at businesses all throughout the community.

Special events are being held during the week, with a kick off at the 12 p.m at Glass Half Full, Tuesday, November 8^th and continuing Tuesday evening, 6-9pm at Open Eye Café where they will be featuring a Rose wine to aid in the process.

On Wednesday those in search of love can apply at the Carrboro Farmer’s Market from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and then join Southern Rail for Trivia Night and Love Connection beginning at 7:00 p.m. More events are being planned so stay tuned!

The requirements to be considered for this opportunity is a town with a population of approximately 15,000 residents, a storybook, picturesque location and a definite sense of community. An opportunity like this does not arise every day, but as often happens, life conspired to keep me from going. The announcement that there would be another Camp Pull-A-Shot did not stop my pangs of jealousy at every Tweet, Facebook update, and photo post I saw, but it gave me hope and reaffirmed my commitment to make it next year.  Thanks to Carrboro Coffee Roasters, that became a reality.

Fast forward one year, and I am arriving at the campgrounds for the second annual Camp Pull-A-Shot, where I will be meeting fellow Baristas, learning, and competing for the next three days. This physical coming together was a strength of Camp. We were able to eschew confusing online one-liners for thought-provoking, face-to-face discussion. Everything from Matrix-esque milk steaming philosophy to the finer points of espresso machine boilers, many topics were covered. When not stroking our collective ‘beard’in deep thought, we fraternized through team events. The teams were determined by the BGA before camp, and the winning team was to be announced on the final night. After running a gauntlet of trivia, craft coffee brewing relay race,  cappuccino & espresso relay race, and a team-staffed cafe competition; I am proud to announce that my team came in third place out of twelve! I was a pleased team leader.

When not sprinting around in a clown costume with hot coffee in hand or hiking the canyon’s many trails, I spent most of my time in classes; which always managed to cover something I hadn’t heard before. In one of my favorite classes, Sensory Skills, we experienced how to differentiate not just varying levels of sweet, salty, and sour, but also how to distinguish different mixes of the aforementioned tastes. This last step proved to be quite tricky, proving that I am (perhaps thankfully) not a super taster. Amongst the other classes I took, we learned how to be more efficient behind the bar, how to adjust an espresso machine’s pump pressure, and what the milk homogenization process is about. Aside from the take-home knowledge, these classes also went towards the BGA’s Certification program. I took my Level 2 exam on our last full day at camp. I passed the written portion, but did not pass the practical by a slim margin. Not one to dwell on the past, I quickly learned from my proctor how I could do better next time. I look forward to my next opportunity to finish up my Level 2 Certification! From what I hear, I’ll have a chance sooner rather than later on the East Coast.
I made many new friends, and caught up with many more old friends, at my first BGA Camp Pull-A-Shot. These memories won’t soon fade and I can’t wait to go back!
