Scott Conary, Owner of Open Eye Cafe & Carrboro Coffee Roastery, will travel to Honduras to Judge the countrys finest coffee thru the Cup of Excellence Program.

An International Coffee Judge, Trainer & Cupper, Scott has been invited to travel to Marcala, Honduras from Carrboro, NC to take part in the evaluation of the countrys finest coffees, thru the Cup of Excellence Program, to be held May 17-21, 2010.

The Cup of Excellence Program is unparalleled in its ability to highlight the best coffee a country has to offer, and represents the 5 major coffee growing regions of Honduras. It is an honor to have been asked to help with this important task of promoting the best coffees Honduras produces, and allowing the world to see their value…a value that in turn supports the farmers that grew these amazing coffees, Mr. Conary states.

Mr. Conary purchased 2 lots of the 2009 Cup of Excellence from Honduras, and considers this a fantastic way to not only promote transparency in the buying chain, but also a way to develop relationships with the growers in a more direct manner. The Cup of Excellence is the most esteemed award given out for top coffees, derived from a strict competition that selects the very best coffee produced in that country, for that particular year.

These winning coffees are chosen by a select group of national and international cuppers. The Cup of Excellence program builds the bridge between the high quality farmer, the high quality trade and eventually the consumer who finds coffees he truly loves and at the same time knows that the farmer has been well compensated & supported.

The goals of the project were many, and include increasing coffee producer (farmer) coffee quality knowledge, to give them a bargaining position when talking price and quality; instruction in technique and knowledge in coffee roasting, brewing and espresso extraction at the producing and retail level, as well as marketing.
